Old Fashion Chicken & Dumplings

Cozy season is upon us, and so are all the cozy recipes!

This was one of the first recipes I learned as a child and a great copycat to Cracker Barrels version! (if you know, you know)

These Chicken & Dumplings are a staple in my house and are made with simple ingredients! Sometimes the thought of anything “from scratch” can seem scary, but it doesn’t have to be!

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • Flour

  • Baking Powder

  • Milk

  • Salted Butter

  • Chicken Broth

  • Cooked Chicken Breast

  • Salt

  • Pepper

Full Recipe

What You’ll Need:

For the dumplings

2C All-Purpose Flour

1tsp Baking Powder

1tsp Salt

1/2c Milk (any milk is fine here)

1/4c cold cubed salted butter

Additional Ingredients

4-6C Chicken Broth

2C Shredded Chicken Breast

Salt and Pepper to taste

How To:

  1. Start by adding flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt to a mixing bowl. Whisk them together, then add in cubed butter. Use a pastry cutter, fork, or your hands to mix until it looks like coarse crumbs.

  2. Once you reach a crumbly texture, pour in the milk and mix until a dough forms. Place the dough on a floured surface, and roll it out to your desired thickness for the dumplings.

  3. Cut the dough into 1-inch squares and set them aside. Any excess flour on these is completely okay!

  4. In a pot over medium heat, bring the broth to a boil. Drop in the dumplings one by one to prevent them from sticking to one another. Let them cook for 5-7 minutes, until they’re soft. The consistency of these will resemble gnocchi.

  5. Stir in your cooked chicken and let it boil for another 5 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste, and your hearty chicken and dumplings are ready to serve!
